REED CARE

NEW REEDS.

Even though I personally play and partially break in all of my reeds, new reeds will need a little time to settle throughout several days. Try playing a few short sessions (10-15 minutes) to get used to the new reed and to give it time to break in.

All reeds are disinfected before shipping.

Reeds must be soaked in water (never saliva!) for approximately 3-5 minutes before every use.

Allow reeds to dry out completely before each use and store in a proper reed case. Reeds cannot be stored in the shipping tubes or they will mold. Rotating several reeds will help the longevity of each reed.

FIXING REEDS.

Loose wires and/or thread -> use pliers to tighten wires (twist clockwise), nail polish/duco cement to re-secure thread.

Too open/resistant -> use pliers to gently squeeze the top and bottom of 1st wire to close tip opening.

Too closed/collapses -> use pliers to gently squeeze the sides of the 1st wire to open tip opening.

Doesn’t fit on bocal -> reed must be reamed using a reamer, sand paper, or file.

WHEN TO DISCARD.

Mold -> make sure your reeds have enough time to fully dry out before use. Be sure to brush your teeth before playing, blow out excess moisture when finished, and store in a ventilated reed case. Shipping tubes are for shipping only, not storing reeds.

Cracks or large chips missing -> be careful not to hit the reed against your teeth, the stand, or anything else.

Several months old -> after several hours of use, reeds will eventually break down and lose their brilliance. Rotating several reeds will help extend their lifespan.

Difficult to play despite adjustments -> discard and replace.
